Day 17: the final way out ⛰️🥾☠️🌊🥂

19 november 2023 - Wailua, Verenigde Staten

I cannot believe today is already day 4 of our adventure! We packed our stuff again, did some dished and made sure we had plenty of water. And again we were so lucky with the weather! This seems to be the best day: blue sky and lots of sun.. so lots of sweat!

The second part would be still the longest part back compared to the day before. And we wanted to have a lunch break at the beach at 5km. Off we went again! Still enjoying every step even if steep up or down. And we even saw a wild pig! No picture. He was faster than me!

At the beach we had a break for an hour. We met some new hikers coming in on the trail as well. They were all talking about rain coming in as per evening. Once again I was so happy we had 4 dry days!

After the beach we had one more steep part and then just down the mountain. With many, many day tourist.. some on flip flops.. How stupid can you be..🧐🪦

’Finally’ we arrived safely at the car park! We made it in one piece!! And having an awesome experience! And many nice memories and pictures including a hell of an exercise!

At the car we checked all windows and tires. All seemed fine. This island is famous in breaking into cars. However we started the engine i noticed a huge drop in fuel level.. that cannot be right.. we still had 25%, which should have been almost 100%. And one tire showed low level of psi, not flat luckily. We decided to stop at the next town first for some food and cold drinks and refuel at first opportunity.

Lunch was at a funny place, not too expensive and fully decorated for X-Mas. When we pulled over at gas station and Rene was fueling the car I heard something weird. And told Rene to stop immediately. All fuel was hitting the ground straight away.. 🤬😡

Meaning that indeed someone made a hole into whatever and stole our fuel and destroyed the car. Now we had to make arrangements with rental company for switching the car.. that was another adventure and did cost us all evening unfortunately! 😞😔

We arrived at hotel with new car after having an expensive taxi ride to airport for new car and almost hitting a big 🐗 on the road 🫣 around 21:30. Totally smelly and ready for shower and some relaxing. The hotel gave us an upgrade to a fancy room with ocean view and a bottle of 🥂, which we used for our small celebration of completing the trail and forgetting the troubles of the car. And yes it started to rain and the Kalalau trail got closed due to raising water levels! But we made it out! And are safe again! With a ‘new’ car!
