Day 3/4: the Puna Coast trail including 1 night camping

7 november 2023 - Volcano, Hawaii, Verenigde Staten

Driving from civilization Kona to Volcano Park. A couple of hours driving through the mountains/hills from volcano’s. Stupid me.. forgot the annual entrance pass of the park.. so we had to buy a new one..

We had to check in at back office to get our overnight camping permit. And many, many security/safety instructions about eruptions, earthquakes and diverse tsunami’s. “Almost” scared we got on the way to drive to starting place of our hike. 18km hike on pure hard lava in diverse shapes and colors. There was wind, wind and wind.. and sun! Next to the coast. It was as being in a different world!  Really amazing. Every step.. till I tripped.. i was hungry, did not focus and a lot of wind..There was I.. on the ground right on the lava which is a glass..there goes my left leg.. and my left hand..

check, check.. what is injured.. where is my first aid kit. Rene as always taking care of me right away. My leg looked ugly.. open scratches with blood.. one deeper wound just below my knee.. and inside of my hand was hurting.. quickly some bandage on it and there we went again.. a bit slower now..

because of the injury and we were close to sun set, we decided to camp one place closer as planned. At 13,5km instead of the 18. We filtered our water and went down to the beach site to make camp. And how beautiful it was down there! Real Hawaii paradise. We cooked food and a glass of wine and went to bed early.

In the morning we had early breakfast and Rene a little swim in the sea. I was a bit stiff of the fall. We took camp down again and started hiking back. This time we had to face the strong wind. Really strong! But we enjoyed.
Once we arrived back at the car we recovered for 5 minutes and we started driving to the other sceneries. Later we checked in at our cabin. Had a very needed shower.. then Rene performed his ‘surgery’ on me. To clean the wound.. and get the bandage off.. that was a nightmare.. but i survived. Now at restaurant for some food at the rim of crater.. just waiting till we see some real fresh lava.. luckily dream exist! Tomorrow a new full day at Volcano park!
